Candle Care 101

Candle safety is so important! Follow these safety recommendations, tips, and tricks for optimal results.

Burning Your Candle:
  • To prevent tunneling, let the candle burn around the entire surface before putting it out.
  • Always trim/break off the wick to 1/4" or less before lighting. I prefer to keep mine at 1/8" (or less) for wooden wicks and 1/4" for cotton wicks.
  • Always burn on a heat-safe surface.
  • Keep away from drafts such as ceiling fans, air conditioners, and vents.
  • DO NOT leave unattended.
  • Keep away from children and pets.
  • Only burn your candle for 4 hours at a time! As with any candle, burning it for too long may cause overheating.
  • Stop usewhen less than 1/2" of wax remains at the bottom of the jar.
  • Replace lid when not in use to prevent dust and dirt. This can cause excess flame and discoloration.
  • If the candle begins to smoke or if the flame height is greater than 1½ inches, gently blow out the candle, allow the wick and wax to cool, and trim the wick. Remove all wick trimmings/debris before relighting
Trimming Your Wick:
Always trim your candle wick before each and every burn! This goes for both cotton and wooden wicks.
For wooden wicks, be sure you trim the charred part of your wick and remove all loose trimmings/debris prior to lighting.
Ways to trim your wick:
  • Basic Wick Trimmer
  • Once cooled, pinch off the charred part with your fingers and a tissue.
  • My favorite way to trim a wooden wick is with nail puller pliers (end nippers).
Benefits of following proper candle care:
  • Lengthens the life of your candle for a stronger and longer burn
  • Keeps flame at correct height
  • Safer and cleaner burn
Not following proper candle care may result in:
  • A tall flame that exceeds 1.5in
  • Smoke and soot
  • Tunneling
